Common Questions

Braces are for Everyone

Braces are worn by both children and adults, not only to improve the attractiveness of your smile, but also to correct improper alignment of teeth that can lead to gum disease and early loss of teeth.

Treatment Time for Braces

Treatment time depends on your individual case.  An average time is approximately 24-26 months.  Your cooperation in keeping appointments, proper hygiene and following instructions may allow us to finish your orthodontic treatment early.

My First Visit to the Office

Your initial visit will give you an opportunity to meet the doctor and our knowledgeable team who will answer any questions you may have regarding orthodontic care.  If braces are needed, a convenient appointment will be made for records and the placement of braces.

The Different Kinds of Braces

In addition to the popular metal braces with which most people are familiar, we also offer the “almost invisible” ceramic braces for those who want their braces worn, but not seen.

The Importance of Orthodontic Records

Orthodontic records usually include X-rays, photographs of the teeth and face, and models of the teeth.  The records provide a wealth of information that is not always revealed by a visual examination.  Complete records form the basis for a thorough and accurate diagnosis and a sound treatment plan.

“Early Treatment” Recommendations

Your first visit can be as early as age 7, according to the American Association of Orthodontists.  Preventive and interceptive care can guide the jaws and erupting teeth into more favorable positions. This improves the growth and alignment of the jaws, preserves space for the permanent teeth, and/or reduces the risk of fracturing protruded front teeth.

Psychological Impact of Braces

Treatment may help with your child’s critical developmental years.  Appearance can have an effect on popularity, social behaviors, self-expectation, personal style and self-image.  Orthodontic therapy may lessen the likelihood that a child will be picked on by other children. Adult orthodontics may positively affect career patterns, social acceptance and self-confidence.

The Importance of Adolescent Growth Spurt

Treatment during this period provides an opportunity to favorably influence the facial profile in a growing child.  Once the growth of the facial bone is complete, correction of jaw discrepancies usually requires surgery.  For this reason, early treatment may save considerable time and money.

Adults and Orthodontic Treatment

Adults of any age can benefit from braces as long as you have healthy teeth and supporting structures.  Increasing numbers of adults are taking advantage of the lifelong benefits of orthodontics because it creates healthy and attractive smiles that last a lifetime.
